Fertilizing
By Chris Harrison
Let’s take a moment to discuss a common
misperception that a lot of people make about fertilizer and that is
that fertilizer is “food” for your grass. If fact, you’ve probably
seen commercials and advertisements that present you with the image
that if you don’t continually apply fertilizer to your grass it will
die.
Now you may remember from your school
days a process that’s known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the
process where a plant, like grass, takes in carbon dioxide from the
air, and with the help of some sunlight, produces an energy-containing
compound, such as sugars and starches, to produce food for the plant.
As you probably already know, the result we get out of all of this
process s the formation of oxygen, which every living creature needs
to survive. So, as you as see, plants get their food from the air…not
the soil.
The three major nutrients that exist in
soil that plants like grass need are nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium. So guess what? The
three major components that make up fertilizer are…nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium.
